Curriculum Overview
Bible
Old Testament: Creation, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses. (book of Genesis)
New Testament: Birth, Life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the parables of Jesus, the miracles of Jesus. (The four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). The life of Paul, and the disciples (book of Acts).
Bible Memory
Bible Verses A-Z (26 in all) :Psalm 100, Psalm 23, and the Lord’s Prayer. Other verses will be learned in songs and lessons.
Phonics
This includes: Phonemic awareness (differentiating between sounds), letter recognition, making sounds of letters, blending sounds together, reading words and sentences. Phonics is taught through drills, manipulatives, arts and crafts, and through hands-on experiential learning activities.
Math
Number recognition, counting past 100, skip counting (5’s, 10’s, even numbers), addition and subtraction will be taught through simple story problems and simple equations (with lots of fun manipulatives)! Time, coin recognition and value, sequencing of events, and understanding graphs and patterns will also be taught. Weather graphs, tally marks, one-to-one correspondence, geometric shapes, and much more.
Unit Studies
Social Studies and Science will be taught through many unit studies. We will start off the year with the study of all about “ME”, my family, my community and community helpers. We will go on community field trips: Post Office, HEB, library, and more. We will include the study of season, weather, holidays, and children of other countries. We study spiders and insects, sea life, animals and plants. We will study the globe and maps, learn about the planets, continents and oceans, our continent, and the United States. We will memorize the states and learn about TEXAS!!
Motor Skills
Gross Motor skills (large muscle movement) will be developed through play activities both inside and outside. Children will play game to music doing various exercises. Swinging, climbing, throwing, and catching balls, and balance activities will all be in incorporated into our days.
Fine Motor skills are developed through cutting, pasting, gluing, folding, writing with pencils, taping, sorting, and doing puzzles. Painting with various types of brushes, painting with fingers, using chalk and markers on boards and paper, and many other activities will be used.
Music
Joyful noises will be made throughout the day! Children will learn a variety of songs and will have opportunity for playing with various instruments. Many patriotic songs will be learned. The States and Books of the Bible will be learned by song.
Arts and Crafts
Art Express will be used as our Fine Art Studies Curriculum. We will also do many crafts that enrich our seasonal studies, phonics curriculum, and science and social studies units.
Chapel
Chapels will be planned throughout the year and will take place at Impact as well as First Christian Church, with the 1st-6th Grade students of Covenant Academy.
Many special speakers will be brought in from around the community and state.
Class Parties
There will be a BOO-HOO breakfast the first day of school, where parents will sign up to host many of our events. A list will be sent in your registration packet.
